BSNL's Vision: Accelerating India's 5G Future by June 2024

BSNL has set its sights on bringing 5G services to India by June 2024, marking a significant stride in the telecommunications landscape of the country. The state-owned telecom operator's ambitious plan was outlined by its Chairman and Managing Director, P. K. Purwar, at the India Mobile Congress.

The roadmap entails the launch of limited 4G services in December, initially in Punjab, gradually expanding across the nation by June 2024. BSNL is making significant strides in this direction, with plans to establish 200 sites ready for the 4G network's launch in Punjab. As part of this endeavor, they aim to set up 3,000 sites in the region, with a progressive increase to 6,000, 9,000, 12,000, and finally 15,000 sites per month, leading up to the national rollout.

The company's commitment to local vendors is evident in its collaboration with IT giant TCS and government-owned ITI for the deployment of 4G network infrastructure. The Indian government's directive to solely allow domestic telecom vendors to supply equipment for state-run telcos' 4G and 5G projects, such as BSNL and MTNL, aligns with the nation's initiative to decrease reliance on international providers.

BSNL's infrastructure is technically primed for the transition to 5G once the 4G rollout concludes. This transition holds promise, as the state-run telco already possesses adequate spectrum to implement 5G services post the 4G deployment.

The endeavor is part of BSNL's strategic focus to introduce 4G services primarily in high-revenue telecom circles in India. Circles such as Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Punjab are among the identified regions for significant revenue generation for the state-owned carrier.

With the government allocating a substantial INR 890 billion (approximately $10.7 billion) for spectrum allotment, BSNL is well-positioned to realize its vision of offering nationwide 4G and 5G services. The spectrum, spread across various bands including 700 MHz, 2.5 GHz, 3.3 GHz, and 26 GHz, will empower BSNL to not only deliver comprehensive 4G and 5G coverage but also extend services to rural areas through connectivity projects, provide Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services, and cater to private networks' spectrum requirements.
